Despite their relatively recent formation, there are already several reasons for SIJJIN to be a household name to the SWR – Barroselas Metalfest audience. Not only they have themselves enriched the first post-pandemic edition in 2022 (our transitional SWR FEATS) brilliantly with a resounding performance, but also their frontman Malte Gericke, at the time using a more “mystical” nickname (Mors Dalos Ra), had visited us on SWR XIV (2011) with his previous band, the very esoterical Necros Christos. It was precisely after the conclusion of that fantastic project that Malte, a native German, surrounded himself with two Spanish musicians and founded Sijjin. Though still keeping Morbid Angel-esque death metal as a basis for their sound, and while it would be wrong to call their music “simple”, Sijjin really are a sort of more obviously metallic, less cinematic version of what Necros Christos used to do. Less “flashy” and more brutal, they play a technically undisputed style of death metal, but also one that knows how to go straight for the jugular to apply its violence.
